Asus Eee 1000H
Asus Eee PC undoubtedly is the trend setter in the sub-notebook market and with the increasing number of competitors; Asus cannot be blamed for the rush of netbooks it has provided. However, things have stemmed down a little bit after the Asus Eee 1000 and we can now have some good time to have a closer look at it and find out what it has to offer. Asus has undoubtedly become the behemoth and gigantically strong brand in the ultra portable notebooks.
To speak about the most annoying factor: Asus has released several products and each of them are so closely named and so slightly different that I was myself quite confused regarding the model! It is better that we clearly demarcate the three different products in the Eee PC 1000 line and then find out about the Asus Eee 1000.
Now it is time that we look into the model at our disposal and the model that we are interested in. By far what I have found (which probably everyone else agrees with) is that the Asus Eee 1000 is the best in the Eee PC 1000 line. With a 10” screen, the netbook packs in Bluetooth and WiFi and has Intel Atom N270 processor to consume less battery and give it a greater runtime. However, the sad part that I found was that it has 40 GB SSD storage! Hey wait! It says SSD storage which means that it requires less storage and produces less noise and heat. Well that is a candy!
Tap Tap!
I guess you know it by now! Yes, I am talking about the keyboard. This is an area where the Eee PC 1000 line improved a lot from the earlier versions which splooshy and rubbery keyboards and I had to actually spend some time before I could get things right on them. The greatest improvement is that the keys don’t wobble as you press them and you don’t have to keep on pressing two keys at a time when you don’t intend to do so. Thanks to the bigger size of all the individual keys! The space bar is also greatly improved and is evenly leveled so that you can tap it to get results even with your thumb hitting only a side of the longer bro!
Something that really annoyed me is the undersized right shift key. Try to hit the key without turning your eyes on it and you are invariably going to hit the Page Up key!
Take it Asus; what you have done with the quick launch bar is really unimpressive. I found an acre of barren land there! With only four buttons on one end and a power button on the other end, it is not really a great piece of Engineering. However, the touchpad is great and decently sized with metal buttons which are quite responsive.
The netbook provides a lot of USB ports, VGA port and also offers WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. It also has tiny speakers which are not really good enough for watching movies or playing games!
Software Support
The Asus Eee 1000 offers either free Xandros distro of Linux or Windows XP home. Well, Linux can haunt you if you are a newbie! What Asus has done with its Eee PC 1000 is that, instead of a complete overhaul, it has incrementally improved the design of the original software!
Media Machine
Well, this is weird! Asus Eee 1000 has turned a bit towards media entertainment and has a DVD player installed and has Picasa! Well, that can be helpful I guess.
Performance and Output
It has the least storage space in the Eee PC 1000 line but is incredibly lightweight and is less power demanding. However, as compensation, it provides 20GB of free internet storage space with free encryption for all data. The bad news is that it gives only 5 GB of download per day! However, the battery life is incredibly high compared to others (in the minimal usage state). It lasts for just below 8 hours.
Conclusion
It is an interesting product! However, Asus has failed to make major upgrades as compared to the earlier models like the Eee PC 701. But with the improved battery life and cheaper price, it is worth spending your money on the Asus Eee 1000H!
